Building a Home in Karachi? Here is Why You Should Plan for a Lift from Day One

If you are currently building a new home in Karachi — whether in DHA, Bahria Town, Clifton, Gulshan, or anywhere else — this article is for you. The single best time to install a home lift is during construction. Here is why, and what you need to plan for.
Why Construction Phase is the Best Time
Dramatically Lower Civil Cost
Installing a lift in an existing home requires creating a shaft, which means cutting through existing floors, reinforcing structures, and significant construction work. When you are building from scratch, the shaft is simply part of the original construction plan. This can reduce the civil cost component by 40 to 60 percent.
Better Design Integration
A lift planned from the beginning can be positioned exactly where it looks and functions best — typically in the entrance hall or central corridor. Retrofitting often means compromising on location because of structural constraints.
No Disruption to Your Home
Retrofitting a lift in a completed, occupied home means dust, noise, and construction activity inside your living space for 2 to 4 weeks. During construction, the lift installation is just another trade working on site — no disruption to daily life at all.
Future Proofing
Even if you do not need a lift today, you might in 10 or 15 years. Installing the shaft infrastructure now — even without the lift equipment — costs very little and means you can add the lift later with minimal work.
What Your Architect Needs to Know
Share these requirements with your architect early in the design phase:
- Minimum shaft dimensions (we provide these based on your chosen lift model)
- Pit depth at the base (typically 100 to 200mm)
- Headroom requirements at the top floor
- Dedicated electrical circuit (typically 16A single phase for residential lifts)
- Door opening dimensions on each floor
