Home Lift for Wheelchair Users in Pakistan: Everything You Need to Know

For wheelchair users in Pakistan, a multi-story home without a lift is a home with significant barriers. This guide covers everything you need to know about making your home fully accessible with the right lift solution.
Why Standard Stair Lifts Do Not Work for Wheelchair Users
The most common mistake families make is purchasing a stair lift (chair lift) thinking it will work for a wheelchair user. It does not — at least not independently. A stair lift requires the user to transfer from their wheelchair to the lift seat, travel up, and then transfer back to a wheelchair on the upper floor. This requires significant upper body strength and the assistance of another person, which defeats the purpose of an independent accessibility solution.
The Right Solution: A Wheelchair Accessible Cabin Lift
A properly sized cabin lift allows a wheelchair user to roll directly into the lift, travel between floors, and roll out — entirely independently if they choose. No transfers, no assistance required.
Minimum Dimensions for Wheelchair Access
To comfortably accommodate a standard wheelchair:
- Cabin width: minimum 900mm, recommended 1000mm or more
- Cabin depth: minimum 1200mm, recommended 1400mm or more
- Door opening width: minimum 800mm clear
- Turning space on each landing: minimum 1500mm x 1500mm clear
Features to Look For
- Through-floor entry and exit: Enter from one side, exit from the opposite side — eliminates the need to reverse out of the lift
- Low threshold: Minimal or zero step between the landing and the cabin floor
- Controls at wheelchair height: Buttons reachable from a seated position
- Handrails inside the cabin
- Mirror on the rear wall: Helps with spatial awareness when reversing
- UPS backup: Essential so a power cut does not strand the lift between floors
Platform Lifts as an Alternative
For shorter vertical distances — such as access from a ground level entrance up to a raised ground floor — a platform lift can be an appropriate and more economical solution. However, for travel between multiple full floors, a cabin lift is always the better choice.
Funding and Support
While Pakistan does not currently have a formal government subsidy program for home accessibility modifications, several charitable organizations and disability support networks may be able to assist with funding in specific cases. Our team can provide documentation to support any funding applications if needed.
